A New Year and New Opportunities
Letter from the Chief Operating Officer
Author: Robin Mersh

The New Year brought the return of many familiar tasks; budgeting, vendor contracts reviews, staff reviews, meeting and event planning. After a very busy first six months in my role, I have learnt a lot and I am endeavoring to take that experience into the review and planning processes. My goal is to execute 2007 planning in the classic way: repeat what we do well consistently and rectify what we don't do so well. I am pleased to report that we have a lot of excellent work to build on.

Technical Committee Update
Message from the Chair
Author: Gavin Young, Technical Committee Chair

As 2006 draws to a close, the Atlanta meeting of the technical committee marked the publication of some significant new Technical Reports and very good progress on the development of other Working Texts that are key to the development of the broadband industry. The DSL Forum has evaluated around 1000 contributions from member companies during 2006. This has greatly facilitated progress and we are seeing increasing interest from other bodies in leveraging our work, especially as interest grows in IPTV and remote management of consumer devices.

Upcoming Plugfest Information

Mark your calendars! The DSL Forum will be sponsoring an Interoperability Test Event in the first quarter of 2007:

The strong response from the First VDSL2 Systems Integrator Plugfest has accelerated VDSL2 plugfest activity in Q107 with two successive test events. The 5th DSL Forum VDSL2 Chip Vendor Interoperability plugfest, to be held the week of January 29th 2007, will allow VDSL2 chip vendors to further improve the interoperability of their VDSL2 implementations. System Integrators will again have an opportunity to demonstrate and debug their VDSL2 products at the 2nd DSL Forum VDSL2 Systems Integrator Plugfest, to be held the week of February 26th, 2007.

The release of Amendment 1 to DSL Forum TR-069 has spurred demand for more testing. The 4th DSL Forum TR-069 Interoperability Plugfest will be successful protocol and help industry leaders drive the interoperability of their TR-069 CPE and Auto-Configuration Servers.

These events will be held at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) group testing facility located in Durham, NH, USA. DSL Forum Plugfests are open to all DSL Forum members. For more details, you can vist the DSL Forum's Plugfest calendar or contact Matthew Langlois at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory at +1.603.862.3089 or by email at mjl@iol.unh.edu.

Marketing Committee Update
Message from the Chair
Author: Rich Cardone, Marketing Chair

In 2006 the DSL Forum aligned its marketing efforts around solutions - not technology - by focusing on three key battlegrounds in the next-generation network - the home, the access network, and the service control plane. The result was the creation and highly successful launch of the BroadbandSuiteTM (BBS) an end-to-end reference architecture that consists of three reference models: BroadbandControl, BroadbandAccess, and BroadbandHome.

BroadbandHomeTM SuperWebinar with LightReading - Feb. 20, 2007

The DSL Forum's BroadbandHome work is having a fundamental impact on the rapidly evolving market of telecom services delivered into the home - namely the remote provisioning, management and maintenance of home networking devices. By providing a common and simplified way to automate the home network, the DSL Forum's home networking architecture empowers service providers to reduce the cost and complexity of delivering services into the home, while improving ease-of-use and service experience for the customer. DSL Forum Recognition Program and Awards
The DSL Forum recognizes the exceptional contributions, leadership duties, and achievements through its quarterly recognition program. The awards categories are as follows: Circle of Excellence, Outstanding Contributor Award, Outstanding Service Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Student Scholarship Awards Program.

At the Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia the DSL Forum awarded the Circle of Excellence Award to Michael Hanrahan and an Outstanding Service Award to former Marketing Committee Chair, Vincenzo Gulla, formerly of Aethra, S.p.A.

The DSL Forum is pleased to recognize Michael Hanrahan with the highest honor the DSL Forum bestows for his consistent dedication and commitment to the industry and to the members of the DSL Forum.

Michael engaged with the DSL Forum Policy and Procedures Committee (PPOC) as a proactive volunteer in Munich in 4Q05. He was subsequently named to fill an ad hoc member seat in PPOC with the unanimous support of the PPOC members and the DSLF Board of Directors. In this relatively short period of time, Michael has established himself as a mainstream member and key contributor within PPOC. To read more about Michael Hanrahan, please click here.

The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Vincenzo Gulla (Aethra, S.p.A.) in recognition of his dedicated service as Marketing Committee Chair.

The Student Scholarship Awards Program kicked off in 2006 with its first ever Benefits of Broadband student paper contest. The Scholarship Award was presented to the paper that provided novel insight and vision into new applications and features for broadband services equipment. DSL Forum members may read the top three winning papers by clicking here.
