Back to BASe-ics – the emerging reality of PON in 2020
By Bernd Hesse, Marketing and BASe Chair of Broadband Forum
With full broadband connectivity services, the Connected Home and the customer experience becoming more critical than ever, Broadband Forum and its BASe series have a responsibility of keeping the industry informed and inspired.
While stay at home initiatives across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic make this more difficult, staying up to date is crucial to make sure the entire ecosystem can continue to work together to deliver the optimum service customers require.
Therefore, BBF has virtually reformatted its BASe workshops. With the new-look workshops delivered via a series of upcoming webinars, people can access the latest information on technologies driving the broadband industry and learn about the latest technologies enabling the next era of connectivity. Taking place throughout May and June, these bi-weekly webinars will offer insights into the fiber industry, featuring presentations from the world’s largest service providers, top-tier analysts, and leading vendors and suppliers.
The Worldwide PON Market
The first webinar in this exciting series focused on ‘The Worldwide PON Market,’ which provided a deep-dive into the current trends, latest developments, and future of the Passive Optical Network (PON) market.
Held on May 14, The Worldwide PON Market webinar featured a number of presentations from Julie Kunstler, Principal Analyst at OMDIA, Lisa Youngers, CEO at Fiber Broadband Association, Eric Joyce, Chair of the Market Intelligence Committee and Board Member at Fiber to the Home Council Europe, Hal Roberts, of Calix and ITU/FSAN/IEEE, and Craig Thomas, Senior Director Strategic Marketing at Broadband Forum.
Together, these experts shared the latest views on market direction, technology and standards progress, and best practices.
PON Reality Check
The topic of PON has become increasingly relevant in recent months, as end-customers have become increasingly reliant on digital technology to live their day to day lives. Whether they are working from home, streaming the latest film release, or staying in contact with their friends and family, PON is crucial to provide reliable, low latency connectivity.
The COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted areas that are currently underserved by fiber. With more rollouts due to take place across the world, operators need to make sure they are making the right choices when it comes to PON technology and meeting the growing demand.
The focus on PON will continue with our next Home BASe Webinars, with the follow topics set to be covered:
- The State of PON Components – May 28
- ECO system update: The State of Vendor PON Solutions – June 11
- The state of PON applications in the telco market – June 25
- Best practices – PON challenges today and in the future – July 11
- The state of PON applications in the MSO market – August 27
Just the beginning
Produced by technology innovators, our BASe sessions offer deep insights into the future of broadband from the world’s largest service providers and cutting-edge perspectives from top-tier analysts and leading vendors and suppliers.
