Town Hall Innovation Series Spring 2024

March 4 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Our first Town Hall Innovation Series of 2024 in Mainz, Germany, saw detailed discussions take place around Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Broadband networks and services are an integral part of our digital lives. AI and ML technologies are opening up new possibilities for improved broadband network efficiency and reliability, with undiscussed benefits for customers and service providers. Mauro Tilocca, TIM and Town Hall Innovation Series Co-Chair introduced the Town Hall Innovation Series presentations.

Mohammad Sharifan, Lead Architect Data and AI Architect, Deutsche Telekom AG, talked about adopting the right AI architecture strategy, outlining the key challenges facing large enterprise network operators. For large enterprise Telco operators, it was highlighted that data management, privacy, and ownership must be addressed to reduce costs and boost efficiency. Standardizing the way robotics communicate with each other is key to unlocking differentiation in the robotics industry according to Bernd Heinrichs, Chief Growth Officer at NEURA Robotics. Robots typically have the same hardware components and are deployed for similar purposes. It is no surprise that companies are struggling to differentiate their offerings, Heinrichs forewarned. Adrian Farrel, Managing Director, Old Dog Consulting, delivered a presentation on how Machine Learning (ML) can improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of optical networks. Farrel touched on the presentations before his and advised that if we do not have access to all of the data then no amount of ML will help enhance fixed networks, and underscored the key roles that vendor-agnostic standards and interworking play. The complexity and density of data traversing the broadband network is increasing as more advanced technologies and applications are being adopted within the home. It is essential that service providers can maintain customer loyalty and provide an enhanced Quality of Experience (QoE) while avoiding rising operations and management (O&M) costs. Service providers need to leverage the intelligence of AI and ML in the cloud to digitalize and monitor vital data in their physical networks was the message expressed by Aihua Guo, Principal Architect, Futurewei. Bringing AI capabilities to the edge of the network can enable high-performance computing capabilities such as low latency, security, resilience, and bandwidth to the area where data is being produced and exchanged and IoT devices are located. According to Jovanka Adzic, Innovation Lead at TIM and Editor of AI@EDGE Overall Architecture, edge computing is crucial in enhancing end-user devices in use cases such as cloud robotics, Industry 4.0, smart city, smart mobility, and extended reality.
