The CPE may finally become a platform
2020.03.10 – An Open CPE Software Blog
‘Verizon, British Telecom, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and Orange joins forces to make the home gateway an application platform. They are painting their new home platform prpl and Broadband Forum green.
Applications on top of the Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) have been talked about for years, but progress is slow. Cost, risk, and time of integrating with different vendors is slowing the pace of innovation. Develop once, deploy anywhere seems a distant dream, and most startups trying to develop applications for the CPE die a slow death caused by development cycles so long that people from Silicon Valley think you are joking.
The problem is clear; CPE hardware, firmware, middleware and software is fragmented. There is no portability between CPEs. The cost of integration is so high that many business cases are impossible. How many apps do you think Google Play or App Store would have have it if took 18 months to develop even the simplest of applications? Oh and by the way, that app only works for Samsung S8 on operator X, be prepared for 12 more months to make it work anywhere else.’
