5G slicing revenue expected to reach $24 billion in 2028
With 3G and 4G, connectivity has been a uniform offering independently of the device or target customer. 5G slicing, by contrast, holds the potential to offer varying levels of connectivity characteristics (for example, service level agreements (SLAs), bandwidth, latency, etc.) for different devices, use cases, and applications.
The expectation is that enterprises will pay a premium for 5G slices that guarantee SLAs for diverse services as opposed to uniform offerings. According to global technology intelligence firm ABI Research, 5G slicing revenue is expected to grow from $309 million in 2022 to approximately $24 billion in 2028, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 106%.
“5G slicing adoption falls into two main categories. One, there is no connectivity available. Two, there is connectivity, but there is not sufficient capacity, coverage, performance, or security. For the former, both private and public organizations are deploying private network slices on a permanent and ad hoc basis,” highlights Don Alusha, 5G Core and Edge Networks Senior Analyst at ABI Research.
Nigeria’s Broadband Penetration Hits 44.5% in July
Nigeria’s broadband usage has continued on the rise, moving up from 40.9% in February 2022 to 44.5% in July 2022, a figure considered hopeful for achieving the national broadband target of 70% in 2025.
“With the technological advancements anticipated in the coming years, it is expected that there will be a proliferation of devices in the industry. It is, therefore, essential for the Commission to ensure that the right regulatory frameworks can accommodate such eventualities,” said Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission.
New US bill could see the return of net neutrality
Net neutrality – the concept that internet service providers (ISPs) must treat all data indiscriminately, without throttling or limiting access to sites – has been a contentious topic in the US for over two decades now.
In the early 2000s, the FCC adopted the position that ISPs were Title I information services, a designation that put them under less regulatory control from the FCC than Title II common carrier services.
“The Net Neutrality and Broadband Justice Act reflects the undeniable fact that today, broadband is not a luxury. It is essential. That means the potential harms that internet users face without strong net neutrality protections and without the FCC able to exercise its proper authority are more sweeping than ever,” said Senator Edward Markey.
DE-CIX breaks 12 Tbps peak traffic at Frankfurt site
Frankfurt Internet Exchange DE-CIX, reached a new data throughput record of 12 terabits per second (Tbps).
“Such a traffic spike in the middle of summer – when people are out enjoying the good weather – is unusual,” said Dr. Thomas King, chief technology officer at DE-CIX.
12 Tbps, specifically 12.43Tbps, equates to over 2.6 million videos in HD quality streamed simultaneously and follows on from the news of a data throughput of 11Tbps at its Frankfurt site in February 2022.
Data traffic at the Frankfurt Internet Exchange has already increased by 14% in 2022 and almost as much as 50% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
Fiber surpasses 2 million internet connections in Argentina
The Argentine telecommunications market produced revenues of 971billion pesos (US$7.28billion at the current exchange rate) in 2021. Internet access produced income of 160billion pesos.
The number of fixed internet accesses grew 9.59% to 10.5million in Argentina at the end of 2021, equivalent to penetration of 73.2% of households in the country. At the end of 2020, there were 9.57million households with fixed internet service.
Fiber optics has been growing rapidly in Argentina and currently more than 2million of the internet connections are via fiber. Cable modem technology continues to lead the market, however, with 5.9million as of the end of 2021.
